🏋️ Coop's First Look at the NEW Rogue Echo Rower
Welcome to Home Gym Club! This erg-centric edition pays homage to one of our favorite pieces of cardio equipment: the almighty rower. Invented in 1871 by William Buckingham Curtis, the first indoor rowing machine set the stage for future iterations like the uber-popular Concept2 RowErg. In addition to revolutionizing the rowing market, the legendary inventor known as “Father Bill” helped establish the Amateur Athletic Union, which later became the U.S. Olympic Committee.
Now that’s someone who pulled his weight in many different directions!
What’s in today’s newsletter:
Coop gets his hands (and feet) on the new Rogue Echo Rower.
We teach you the correct technique to use a rower safely and effectively.
Our cardio equipment expert breaks down the similarities and differences between rowing and cycling.
We put together 3 intense interval workouts so you can maximize your time on the erg.

How to Use a Rowing Machine (The RIGHT Way)
While navigating a treadmill or elliptical is pretty self-explanatory, the same can’t be said for a rower. As a certified personal trainer, I see plenty of gym-goers make similar errors that hold them back from getting the most out of their erg-based workouts.
From familiarizing yourself with the four components of proper form to learning common mistakes to avoid, set yourself up for success by learning how to use a rowing machine (the right way!). By the time you’re finished, you’ll know terms like catch, drive, finish, and recovery and understand why they matter.
This or That
Rowing vs. Cycling
Rowing and cycling are two means to the same end: improved cardiovascular health, increased strength and muscular endurance, and calorie burn. Like all aerobic exercise, both types of workouts can also improve your mental health by boosting your mood and potentially improving your self-esteem. But while the outcome is the same (assuming you’re exercising regularly), there are some notable differences between the two types of workouts.
Should you strap your feet in and pull your way to a leaner, stronger self? Or should you adjust the handlebars and start spinnin’ till sweat’s drippin’? Use our rowing vs. cycling comparison to choose the best cardio option for you.

3 Heart-Pumping Rowing Interval Workouts
Whether you’re new to rowing or simply looking to shake up your current cardio routine, performing interval workouts can break up the monotony and even push your body toward goals that include fat loss and muscle growth. From incorporating various speeds and efforts to including off-machine exercises, there are plenty of ways to make your erg sessions dynamic and effective.
We called upon a HIIT expert, as well as GGR Head of Content Kate Meier, to create a trio of interval-style rowing workouts that cater to different fitness goals. That means you have ample options (and no excuses) to challenge yourself to an intense bout with one of my favorite cardio machines.
